Minister, students sign proclamation

Education Minister Judy Foote was joined by two students to sign a proclamation declaring October 15, National Students Against Impaired Driving Day. Danielle Yetman, representing the students of Booth Memorial, and Kate Dearness of Bishops College joined Minister Foote in encouraging all students to take time on October 15 to remember the tragedies caused by drinking and driving.

"I am pleased that 14 high schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are taking advantage of National Students Against Impaired Driving Day to promote the critical importance of safe and responsible driving," said Minister Foote. "We want our students to make good personal decisions and live to experience all the joys the future holds for them."

A report released in August of this year entitled The Real Facts on Alcohol Use, Injuries and Deaths notes that 43 per cent of all motor vehicle fatalities are attributable to alcohol. "This is a staggering figure," said Minister Foote. "Our young people must recognize the inherent dangers of impaired driving, whether they are operating a car, ATV, snowmobile or boat. It is also important to remember not to get into a vehicle when the driver has been drinking."

Sponsored by the Student Life Education Company, National Students Against Impaired Driving Day promotes healthy decisions among Canadian students on alcohol. In 2002, over 300 schools are participating nationwide in activities and events.

"Our young people should also take advantage of National Students Against Impaired Driving Day to remind their parents and other adults of the dangers of impaired driving. It is not only students who must understand the risks and repercussions of driving while under the influence of alcohol," said Minister Foote.
