Ministers welcome Mexican delegation to province

Judy Foote, Minister of Education, and Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, today welcomed a delegation of Mexican authorities who are visiting the province as part of an Education Task Force to explore best education practices in select provinces in Canada.

"We have a high quality education system in this province," said Minister Foote. "This visit by the Mexican delegation provides an excellent opportunity for us to share our successful programs with another jurisdiction and to learn from them as well. They deliver a system to some 30 million children in K-12, yet there are some similarities in the challenges we face."

"We are extremely proud of our post-secondary education system in Newfoundland and Labrador and we are pleased to share our best practices," said Minister Kelly. "Our provincial student loans program is designed to provide benefits to students attending post-secondary institutions while ensuring appropriate accountability measures to assist students in completing their post-secondary training in an affordable manner."

While in the province, the delegation will attend a number of information sessions from the departments of Education and Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education including an overview of the K-12 and post-secondary education systems, curriculum development/literacy, distance education, system assessment and accountability and special needs. The delegation will also attend information sessions and tour facilities at Memorial University of Newfoundlands St. Johns campus, the Marine Institute, and College of the North Atlantic.

The Secretara de Educacin Pblica (SEP) delegation began their visit in Toronto on September 19 and will tour Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick before returning to Mexico on September 28.

Members of the delegation include: Elisa Bonilla, General Director for Material and Educational Methods; Ramon de la Pena, Director of CONAVIT (National Council of Adult Education and Lifelong Learning); Eugenio Cetina, Director General for Higher Education; Ignacio Villagordo, Director General for Planning, Accredition and Revalidation of Studies; Antonio Gago, Head Advisor to the Secretary of Education; Daniel Gonzalez Spencer, Director General for International Affairs; and Juan Jose Serrato, Director for Bilateral Affairs.
