NLIS 1 July 29, 2002 (Education) Education department sponsors professional development institutes for teachers The Department of Education is moving forward in a comprehensive way to improve student achievement in mathematics. The department is facilitating and funding five mathematics institutes for teachers this summer, in addition to the in-servicing offered to teachers when new math curriculum is being implemented. "It is incumbent on the Department of Education to ensure teachers have an opportunity for sustained professional development so that students benefit from new curriculum, methodologies and teaching practices," said Education Minister Judy Foote. "Government provided $4.4 million this year to support professional development for teachers." This is the latest in a series of steps begin taken by the provincial government to improve student performance in mathematics. Government established a Provincial Advisory Committee on Mathematics Achievement. Partners include the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers� Association, the Faculty of Education at Memorial University, provincial school boards and the Department of Education. This working group will provide advice to the department and school boards on an achievement strategy for improving mathematics achievement. Also, the minister announced, last week, the addition of two new mathematics specialists with the Department of Education to work directly with principals and teachers in schools to improve the teaching and learning process. Approximately 180 mathematics teachers are registered to attend the following summer math institutes:
