Education Minister celebrates Canada Book Day

Today, Education Minister Judy Foote joins with librarians, teachers and writers across Canada in recognizing Canada Book Day.

Canada Book Day, which coincides with UNESCOs World Book Day, celebrates libraries, reading, and the diverse pleasures to be gained from books.

Minister Foote said: "The Department of Education is proud to provide funding for the 96 libraries across Newfoundland and Labrador. Government recently announced the allocation of an additional $1 million to the Public Information and Library Resources Board for the purchase of new books. This is the third year in a row such an investment has been made in addition to the libraries regular operating grants. This investment will help increase the variety and inventory of the provinces public libraries.

"The availability of reading materials is a major factor in improving literacy. We know there is a direct correlation between the literacy levels of our people and the economic prosperity of our province. An investment in literacy is an investment in our future. On Canada Book Day, I encourage everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador to drop by their local library, pick up a book and experience the joy of reading a good book."

Minister Foote will celebrate Canada Book day by reading to students at two schools in the St. Johns area. The minister will be at Hazelwood Elementary at 9 a.m., followed by Roncalli Elementary at 10:45 a.m.
