Tender awarded for Burgeo school

Education Minister Judy Foote announced today that the tender for construction of a new K-12 school for Burgeo has been awarded to Pitman Enterprises of St. Pauls.

"Government is investing $4.5 million in this new facility and construction will begin shortly," said Minister Foote. "In addition to being one of the most modern and technically advanced schools in the province, complete with local area network access in each classroom, the Burgeo Broadcasting System will broadcast from the new facility. This partnership with a local community group is in keeping with governments Strategic Social Plan which encourages community use of public buildings. "

This new school is indicative of governments commitment to providing high-quality education and appropriate facilities for our children, regardless of their geographic location. It is also an example of how education stakeholders, working together, can ensure that our students education is the best it can be. This will truly be a school/community centre."

Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons, M.H.A. for the District of Burgeo and LaPoile, also expressed his pleasure at todays announcement. "I take this opportunity to thank the parents and board members for advocating for better facilities. I am delighted we are moving forward with the development of this school which will strengthen education opportunities for all children of the area. This also reinforces governments commitment to the future of the town of Burgeo."

The school is designed to accommodate 235 students in Grades K-12 and will be 29,000 square feet in area. It will be equipped with a laboratory, technology education and areas for students with learning disabilities, a guidance centre, gymnasium and library resource centre with high quality teaching and learning resources. Landscaping and a paved parking lot will also be provided. Classrooms and other instructional areas will be equipped with computers to be used by the students and teachers. The design of the school provides for community use of the school, particularly the gymnasium, library and food preparation areas.

This latest expenditure brings to $19,228,000 the total amount government has invested to improve school facilities in the Cormack Trail School Board since 1997.
