Early childhood literacy grants announced

Education Minister Judy Foote announced today the approval of $133, 521.40 in grants for early childhood literacy programs. This funding is the Department of Education�s allocation under the Early Childhood Development Initiative, Stepping into the future.

Funding which ranges from $1,000 to $20,000 is being offered to the following non-profit community-based early childhood literacy programs:

  • Main Brook Preschool Literacy Program

  • Parent and Community Support for Early Literacy Development, St. Joseph�s
  • Books for Babies
  • Early Childhood Language Stimulation Program
  • Fatima Academy Afterschool Playgroup
  • Cow Head Public Library Reading Circle
  • Story Time Adventures at the Exploits Valley Community Coalition
  • Fogo Island Fun and Learning Centre
  • St. Teresa�s School Early Intervention Project for At-Risk Preschoolers
  • Bishop Abraham Elementary Springboard to Literacy Two
  • PRINTS (Parents Roles Interacting with Teacher Support) at the Buckmaster�s Circle Community Centre
  • Parent and Community Support for Early Literacy Development, Holyrood
  • PRINTS Program for the Vista Family Resource Centre
  • Booky the Bear at the Curtoglen Literacy Centre
  • PRINTS Program for the Northern Peninsula/Labrador Straits Family Resource Centre
  • Coordinating a Family Literacy Program (PRINTS)
  • Two Model Projects of the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program
  • Empowering Parents as Facilitators of their Children�s Early Literacy Development by the MacMorran Community Centre
  • Cowan Heights Elementary Early Literacy Project

"I am pleased we have been able to offer support to such a wide range of early childhood literacy programs," said Minister Foote. "Strengthening our capacity for the delivery of early childhood literacy programs is an important step towards improving our literacy levels and attaining our goal of achieving the highest literacy levels in Canada."
