Minister congratulates scholarship winners

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education congratulated scholarship recipients at Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic and Marine Institute.

"It was a great pleasure to award these scholarships for academic excellence," said Minister Kelly. "The hard work and dedication of these students is a clear demonstration that our youth are our greatest resource. Education is a critically important key ingredient for long-term economic success. As tomorrow's leaders, these youth will help shape our future."

Forty scholarships were awarded to Memorial students. Thirty-six of these were Centenary of Responsible Government Scholarships (two of which have not yet been confirmed). In addition, 14 Centenary scholarships were awarded to College of the North Atlantic students and two Centenary scholarships were awarded to students at Marine Institute. The scholarships, first presented in 1956, are awarded to students registered in a course of study at Memorial University, the Marine Institute or College of the North Atlantic. In total, 52 of these Centenary of Responsible Government scholarships are dispersed throughout the provincial public post-secondary institutions.

The remaining six scholarships were awarded to Memorial students and included such scholarships as the Senior Jubilee Scholarship for $3000, awarded to the Memorial student who attains the highest average in examinations held during the first two semesters of the student's second academic year; The Dr. Arthur Barnes Scholarship for $1,200, awarded to a student at Memorial University of Newfoundland who has successfully completed two years of a degree or diploma course; and the Dr. William W. Blackall Scholarship for $1,200, awarded to a student at Memorial University of Newfoundland who has successfully completed two years of a degree or diploma course.

"I am pleased that the provincial government offers this recognition and financial support to deserving students at our public institutions," said Minister Kelly. " These young people serve as examples to all youth in the province."
