Minister comments on recent visit to women's centres and College of the North Atlantic campuses on the west coast

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, today commented on her recent visit to women's centres, the L.S. Eddy Centre and College of the North Atlantic campuses on the west coast.

"This was an extremely interesting trip," said Minister Kelly. "A great deal was accomplished in a few short days. I think meeting students and seeing their enthusiasm for learning was a highlight of the trip. I was also impressed, as I always am, by the strength and ingenuity of the women who work in the women's centres across this province. Their commitment to improving the lives of women in their communities is inspiring."

The minister's two-day trip began Tuesday evening with a dinner gala honouring Duke of Edinburgh's Program volunteers, including recent Ono Award winner Rosemary Finn, in Stephenville. On Wednesday, the minister traveled to Port aux Basques where she met with representatives from the Gateway Status of Women Council to follow up on the women's health forum held this past March and visited the nondestructive testing techniques program at the college campus.

On her return to Stephenville, the minster met with representatives from the Bay St. George Status of Women Council to discuss, among other things, opportunities for women in non-traditional career fields, such as oil and gas and paper mills; observed how resources can be brought together to help young people in the community during a tour of the L.S. Eddy Centre; and visited the digital animation lab, and ABE classes at the college.

"The L.S. Eddy Centre tour was an eye opener as well," said Minister Kelly. "To see all the resources a young person could need in one place, with literacy classes, a family resource centre and an alternative school operating all under one building was enlightening. I strongly support the centralized, easy access to support resources and plan on promoting a similar initiative in my own district of Gander and area."
