Ministers congratulate recipients of Chief Commissioner's Gold Award

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education and Julie Bettney, Minister of Health and Community Services, today extended their congratulations to the13 members of the Girl Guides of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Council, who received the Chief Commissioner's Gold Award in a ceremony held yesterday at the Confederation Building.

Minister Kelly said: "As a former guide, I know the hard work and pride that goes into these awards. In this the International Year of the Volunteer, I can think of no finer example of the spirit of volunteerism than these young women who have given their time and energy toward this award."

The Chief Commissioner's Gold is the highest honour a youth member can achieve in the Senior Branches Program. The award is presented to guides who have demonstrated volunteer effort in the various branches of the guide organization, worked at summer camps and met a number of challenges through their many years of involvement in the guiding movement. The average time of service of each recipient of the award was 12 years. 

"These young women will be the community leaders of tomorrow. They have put a great deal of volunteer work into this pin and each and every young woman here today should be very proud of their efforts. In this, the International Year of the Volunteer, they stand as an example of the importance of volunteering to the health and well-being of communities across this province," said Minister Bettney.
