Increased funding for Grenfell College renovations

Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education Minister Sandra C. Kelly announced today an increase in funding to refurbish the exterior of the Arts and Science building at Memorial University's Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook.

In addition to the $2.1 million announced in fiscal year 2000-2001 for repairs to the building's exterior brick, today Minister Kelly announced a further investment of $1.9 million to modernize the building's appearance, including the construction of a glass curtain-wall' and a new front-entrance portico. Additional improvements including new pool masonry will also be made.

"Government investment in this renovation project now totals $4 million," said Minister Kelly. "Renovations will not only address the safety concerns related to the exterior brick work, but the new entranceway will give the Arts and Science building, the college's main administrative building, a more appropriate identity consistent with the rest of the campus."

"This funding is in addition to the $3 million invested in 1999-2000 to construct a residence complex for Grenfell students. I understand that construction is about to begin on the residence project with occupancy targeted for January 2002," added the minister. "I am delighted that we have been able to fund these improvements to Grenfell College and look forward, as I know do the students, faculty, staff and administration, to the completion of the work."

Memorial University President Axel Meisen said he was very pleased that government was committing the additional funds to the refurbishing project. "One of Memorial University's greatest strengths is the support we receive, formally and informally, from the provincial government and we are deeply appreciative of that," said Dr. Meisen. "The physical changes reflect our pride in Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial's small liberal arts and sciences campus. These changes will enhance the functionality and the beauty of the campus for the benefit of everyone in the community."
