Government establishing Student Investment and Opportunity Corporation

Sandra C. Kelly, Minister of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education, announced the establishment of a Student Investment and Opportunity Corporation with an initial allocation of $4 million. It will provide programs for young people which will give them more opportunities to gain work experience and employment to offset the cost of their education.

"I am pleased to announce this innovative new approach, which is in direct response to the need to create more employment opportunities for post-secondary students," said Minister Kelly. "We want to ensure that students have the opportunity for attachment to the workforce and that rural students in particular can avail of opportunities to save more for their education."

The Student Investment and Opportunity Corporation will enable the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education to set direction and administer student employment initiatives which will: provide an opportunity for youth to gain work experience; strengthen the transition from school to work; provide an opportunity to develop employability skills; and help reduce student debt load.

"The establishment of the Student Investment and Opportunity Corporation is also intended to address the high unemployment rate among youth. The transition from school to work remains one of the key problem areas and building on existing youth employment programs under this corporation is an important step in effectively addressing this challenge," stated Minister Kelly.
