Lewisporte interchange open to traffic

The Lewisporte interchange, including a two-span overpass structure at the junction of Route 340 and the Trans Canada Highway, opened to traffic this week, announced Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett. The construction of the interchange was a two-year, $3.8 million project.

"These improvements allow for better flow of traffic through the intersection, as the need for left hand turn at the intersection has been eliminated," said Barrett. "We expect these changes will significantly enhance safety for motorists in the area."

The intersection of Route 340 and the Trans Canada Highway is one of the busiest intersections along the highway. Route 340, the Road to the Isles, services the Lewisporte-New World Island-Twillingate areas. Lewisporte has a major wholesale distribution center, as well as a supply centre for fuel to the Gander International Airport. In addition, fish trucks from the Twillingate area and pulp wood from various locations move through this intersection. Now that the interchange is open and is new to motorists in the area, the department asks the public to pay particular attention to the directional signage which will direct them to their destination.
