Four communities in Labrador will soon see upgrading work commence on local roads. Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett, Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernest McLean and Cartwright-L'Anse au Clair MHA Yvonne Jones today announced government has awarded four road improvement contracts, valuing $1.92 million, for communities in Labrador.

A contract valued at $768,858.26 has been awarded to Bonne Bay Contractors Limited of Norris Point. Work will include upgrading various roads within the community of St. Lewis. Work will commence immediately and be completed by October 31, 2001.

C&T Enterprises Limited of Forteau was awarded a $434,743.85 contract for work in Mary's Harbour, including upgrading various roads within the community of Mary's Harbour. Work will commence immediately and be completed by October 31, 2001.

The contract to upgrade local roads in Charlottetown was awarded to RDN Construction of St. John's and is valued at $504,342.85. Work will begin immediately and is also scheduled to be completed by October 31, 2001.

The contract to build the first road in Norman Bay was awarded to Glen Corporation Limited of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, at a value of $215,050.00. The community road is four metres wide, stretching from the community of Norman Bay to the town dump, for a distance of approximately 1.6 kilometres. Work will begin shortly and be completed by this fall.

"This is great news for the towns as these projects will mean substantial upgrades for their roads," said Mr. Barrett. "Of course, I'm delighted to be able to fulfil my commitment to the people of Norman Bay by allocating funding and awarding a contract for the first road in the community. This is a significant milestone for residents and for government."

Minister McLean is pleased with this announcement and stated: "This is part of government's commitment to ensuring that transportation needs are met for the residents of Labrador."

Ms. Jones said she is delighted that these roads will be upgraded before the end of the year. "We are predicting an increase in traffic on local roads as the highway is connected and we need to work with the communities to upgrade infrastructure in preparation for the growth." Ms. Jones added that the road for Norman Bay is a dream come true for local residents. "They have waited a long time for this infrastructure, and I am very pleased to have been able to work with them to make this happen.

Funds have also been allocated to complete work on roads in the communities of Port Hope Simpson and Cartwright next year.
