Ramp work begins on St. Barbe wharf

Work has started on the installation of an adjustable ramp for the provincial wharf in St. Barbe. Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett, Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Ernest McLean and Cartwright-LAnse au Clair MHA Yvonne Jones made the announcement today.

A contract valued at $1,960,164.65 (HST included) was recently awarded to Northland Contracting of Bay Bulls. The contract is for the provision of an adjustable ramp at the St. Barbe terminal and the necessary upgrades to the existing wharf. The work began this week and is expected to be completed by the beginning of December.

"The mechanical ramp will facilitate loading and offloading of vehicles, thereby improving traffic flow to and from the vessel," said Mr. Barrett. "When tides fluctuate, the operators will be able to adjust the ramp to accommodate movement of vehicles on and off the vessel. Bigger vehicles, especially tour buses and tractor trailers, will see a noticeable improvement as the transition to and from the ship will be smoother."

Minister McLean said the ramp and upgrades to the wharf demonstrate governments commitment to enhancing the quality of transportation services to the people of coastal Labrador.

"Its important to provide the necessary infrastructure if we are to ensure the people of coastal Labrador are able to take advantage of the benefits that will accrue from the completion of the Trans Labrador Highway," Mr. McLean said. "The adjustable ramp and other improvements to the wharf will enable traffic to flow at a much improved rate to and from the Labrador Straits."

"Weve experienced a 50 per cent increase in passenger and vehicular traffic since the province became responsible for the St. Barbe-Blanc Sablon service in 1997. We expect this steady growth to continue with improvements to the ferry service and the further development of the Trans Labrador Highway," said Ms. Jones. "The introduction of this adjustable ramp in St. Barbe is an example of yet another improvement to the service."
