Minister meets with Corner Brook Port Corporation

Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, met with Ray Pollett, chair of the Corner Brook Port Corporation, and vice chair Brendan Mitchell, on July 25 to discuss progress relating to the Port of Corner Brook.

Mr. Barrett welcomed the efforts of the Corner Brook Port Corporation. "I am very pleased to see the coming together of the users of the Port of Corner Brook, the Corner Brook City Council, and other interested parties," said Mr. Barrett. "The momentum of the work undertaken thus far by the Corner Brook Port Corporation will carry over into greater activity and better use of the port facilities in the future."

Highway linkages to and from the Trans Canada Highway and the industrial development zones in Corner Brook are now complete and functioning to move traffic to and from the port.

Mr. Pollett and Mr. Mitchell also discussed with Minister Barrett issues related to marine services at the Port of Corner Brook. Topics of discussion included the reliance of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper on marine shipping, the importance of the Oceanex container vessel service to the economy of the west coast, the use of the port by the local fish producers, and the potential of a ferry link to Belledune, New Brunswick. Discussions between the provincial and federal governments regarding ownership of the Port of Corner Brook continue.
