Completion of Cooper Boulevard announced

Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation and Sandra Kelly, MHA-Gander, have announced the completion of Cooper Boulevard to Gander Bay Road and improvements to the intersection at Airport Boulevard and Cooper Boulevard in Gander.

One of the most important changes for residents will be a 2.5 km extension to Cooper Boulevard, connecting it with Gander Bay Road, which will improve traffic flow in the area. Improvements will also be made to the intersection of Cooper and Airport Boulevards, which will have substantial benefits for both residents and visitors to the area. The improvements include the construction of concrete curbed islands to assist in channelling traffic and delineating turning lanes at the intersection.

"As MHA for Gander district, the improvements that we are making to Cooper Boulevard and Airport Boulevard are something that I have worked towards since being elected in 1996 and I am very pleased to see this work moving forward," said Sandra C. Kelly, MHA-Gander. "The changes will have significant benefits for the business community, as Gander Bay Road, the business park and the Trans Canada Highway will now be connected."

In particular, Ms. Kelly stressed the substantial benefits to the Gander Business Park. "With the road improvements government has planned, there will be increased visibility for existing businesses in the park, which is expected to have an impact on the economy in our region," she said.

"The improvements to the intersection will also enhance traffic flow in that area," added Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett. "The extension we plan to build will connect Cooper Boulevard to Gander Bay Road, thus providing a means to bypass most of the built up areas along Gander Bay Road."

The Department of Works, Services and Transportation expects to call tenders for this $250,000 road improvement project over the next couple of months.
