$1.2 million for Twillingate-Fogo roads projects

Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Gerry Reid, MHA - Twillingate-Fogo, today announced $1.2 million for road upgrades to the area.

"This is a very significant investment in roads in the area and reinforces governments commitment to improving the transportation infrastructure in our province," said Barrett. "Residents will certainly see an improvement in driving conditions once the work is completed."

Projects planned for 2001/02 include upgrading and repaving a section of Route 340; resurfacing a section of Tilting Road, Fogo Island; and paving a section of road on Change Islands.

"I am very pleased with the allocation of funding for my district, in light of the fact the total allocation for local roads is $22 million for the entire province," said Reid. "We've come a long way with regards to the upgrading and paving of roads in Twillingate-Fogo district in the last five years. It wasn't too long ago that the only paved road on New World Island was the main road across the island. There are still numerous roads in the district that need to be paved but this government is committed to completing this work as more funds become available."

The department expects to call tenders for the projects over the next several months.
