Major upgrades for Port au Port roads

Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, and Gerald Smith, MHA - Port au Port, today announced government has allocated $800,000 for road improvement projects in the area.

"When the provincial budget was announced government reiterated its commitment to improving the provinces transportation infrastructure," said Barrett. "As a follow through on that commitment, Im very pleased to be able to announce these projects which will greatly improve driving conditions in the area."

Projects planned for 2001/02 include resurfacing sections of Route 463 in the Lourdes and Mainland area; resurfacing approximately 1.7 kilometres of Lower Cove Hill; and resurfacing approximately one kilometre of Goose Pond Road.

"Im pleased that government is moving ahead with these projects," said Smith. "This announcement certainly means a lot to my constituents. Work has been ongoing for the past couple of years and government is committed to making further improvements. We know how important it is for a community to have good transportation infrastructure."

The department expects to call tenders for the projects over the next several months.
