Bay of Islands receives $800,000 for roads

Works, Services and Transportation Minister Percy Barrett and MHA Eddie Joyce today announced $800,000 in road upgrades for the Bay of Islands.

"Government recognizes the need for improvements to provincial highways and this funding will allow major improvements to be made in the district," said Barrett. "Residents of the area will certainly see improved driving conditions when the work is completed."

Projects scheduled to be done in 2001/02 include road stabilization from Cooks Brook to Halfway Point; repairing a section of the highway into Coxs Cove; resurfacing approximately five kilometres in various locations throughout the district; along with other miscellaneous highway repairs.

"I am very pleased with these improvements which will make the roads safer for travel in our area," said Joyce. "I have committed myself to upgrading our highways and this is another major step in these improvements."

The department expects to call tenders for the projects over the next several months.
