New ramp for St. Barbe wharf

Percy Barrett, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, announced today $1.5 million has been allocated in the provincial budget to install an adjustable loading ramp and make the necessary modifications to the wharf in St. Barbe.

The mechanical ramp will facilitate loading and offloading of vehicles. When tides fluctuate, the operators will now be able to adjust the ramp to accommodate movement of vehicles on and off of the vessel, particularly tour buses and tractor trailers.

"We did experience some growing pains on the service last year, but thats to be expected when you introduce a new vessel," said Minister Barrett. "The people of the area wanted a larger vessel and that is what they have. Adjustments have to be made to accommodate the increased traffic, but overall we believe the service has improved."

Cartwright-LAnse au Clair MHA Yvonne Jones says she is pleased with governments investment in the St. Barbe docking facility. "In order to provide this important marine transportation link to the people of my district, we have to ensure proper infrastructure is in place," said Ms. Jones. "The people of the Labrador Straits have been lobbying for some years for improved ferry services and wharf facilities. This investment will go a long way in improving the docking situation over previous years."

The department expects to be able to call a tender for the work in early spring.
