Canada and Newfoundland governments
announce highway initiatives for 2001/2002

Industry Minister Brian Tobin, M.P. for Bonavista-Trinity-Conception, on behalf of Transport Minister David Collenette, together with Percy Barrett, provincial Minister of Works, Services and Transportation,  announced on February 14 that 21 highway improvement projects will be carried out in fiscal year 2001/2002 under existing CanadaNewfoundland highway initiatives. This years initiative will create approximately 500 direct and indirect jobs.

Not only will these projects ensure that Newfoundland and Labrador continues to have an efficient transportation system; they will also make a significant contribution to the local construction industry, said Mr. Tobin.

We have been able to make significant improvements to Newfoundland and Labradors transportation infrastructure with projects like these, said Mr. Barrett. This federal-provincial initiative has been crucial to the development of the provinces highway system and we look forward to working with the federal government to develop similar initiatives for the future.

The federal government will provide approximately $35 million under the Trans-Canada Highway Agreement and $15 million under the Regional Trunk Roads Agreement for these projects. The funds will be used to begin new projects or complete existing ones.

Adequate highway infrastructure is a critical component of Canadas ability to compete in the global economy,  said Mr. Collenette.  As a result of these initiatives, Newfoundland and Labrador has been able to strengthen its transportation network and overall economy.

These projects are part of the existing Newfoundland Transportation Initiative Agreement signed by the federal and provincial governments in 1988. The agreement expires in 2003.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.

Tenders for these projects will begin immediately.
