Season closes for Straits ferry

Rick Woodford, Minister of Works, Services and Transportation, wishes to advise the public that the last trip of the St. Barbe-Blanc Sablon ferry for the 2000/01 operating season is scheduled for January 20, 2001, subject to ice conditions.

"I was pleased to accommodate service users by extending the run for two and a half weeks beyond the normal schedule," said Mr. Woodford. "This allowed individuals and businesses more time to travel and transport goods across the Straits."

As expected, the MV Apollo was able accommodate increased traffic over the past year, even during the peak summer travel period when both private and commercial traffic volumes were at an all time high. This year's operation provides a solid foundation upon which to base further improvements and will help ensure the service mirrors future demands as construction of the Trans Labrador Highway continues.
