(Minister responsible for the Status of Women)

Minister comments on successful Women and Leadership dinner series

Sandra C. Kelly, Minister responsible for the Status of Women, today commented on the success of the Women and Leadership dinner series.

"We had four successful events across the province in Harbour Grace, Gander, Corner Brook and most recently Happy Valley-Goose Bay," said Minister Kelly. "I am impressed by the interest of women who have attended these events. Since the first dinner in Harbour Grace, women across the province have come together to encourage one another to become active in the community on a political level."

Each event involved a dinner and was followed in most cases by a panel discussion by women who have been active in the political processes of their communities, either through their membership on a board of directors, a school board or a municipal council. All four were successful, well attended events that brought women together in their communities to discuss the implications of becoming involved in the political process.

"Women have a vital contribution to make to the social, political and economic development of this province, but are not yet equally or adequately represented in the forefront of the decision making process," said Minister Kelly. "It is important that women seek election at community and provincial levels so that our systems and decisions will be more balanced, comprehensive and relevant for all people of the province."

The minister continued: "This is a time of great opportunity for women in the province with municipal and school board elections being held this fall. These events provide an opportunity to challenge women to become involved either through seeking election or by putting their name forward for a public service board. Women have different perspectives, experiences and priorities which are important to bring to the table. Their leadership is important!"
