The following is being distributed at the request of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador:

Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced the names of the 20 post-secondary students who are receiving a scholarship under Sport Newfoundland and Labradors 2000 Scholarship / Bursary Program.

Angela King, president of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, stated, "We are very pleased with the success of the 2000 Scholarship / Bursary Program and the impact it has on providing much needed support to this provinces post secondary elite athletes, coaches and officials who excel at the academic and athletic level."

King stated that a total of 57 applications were received for this years scholarship program. The scholarship committee, under the chair of director Bill Burke of Grand Falls - Windsor, met in late March and selected the scholarship recipients.

Burke said, "The committee continues to be more impressed each year with the caliber of athletes, coaches and officials applying for a scholarship / bursary under our program. With the standards that are applied to the selection process, the athletes with the highest marks academically followed by their high athletic performance over the past year are the individuals who end up receiving a scholarship / bursary. The Scholarship Trust Fund specifies that scholarships can be awarded to either one of three categories of post secondary students; namely, athlete, coach or official. This years selection includes sixteen athletes, two coaches and two officials."

For the 2000 Scholarship Program, funding in the amount of $5,000.00 was received from the Board of Trustees of Sport Newfoundland and Labradors Scholarship Trust Fund; and Kevin Aylward, Minister of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, matched Sport Newfoundlands contribution with a $5,000.00 grant.
