Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association 2001 award finalists 

The Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association is holding their annual awards luncheon this Saturday at Sinbad's Hotel in Gander. This is an annual event where the best and most dedicated throughout the year get the recognition they deserve. The volleyball association gives out nine awards every year to athletes, coaches, and officials. Below are the 2001 finalists for each award.

REG SOPER MEMORIAL AWARD 
This award is for dedication and work in volleyball. The three finalists are:

Eric Hiscock: 
Coached seven teams this year 
Manager of the Canada Games team
Member of the NLVA Executive
Hosted two large tournaments this season on Bell Island
He has put more work into this sport this past year than was expected. Volleyball is an enormous part of his life.

Ron Noseworthy:
Ron is the assistant coach for the Men's Canada Games Team. 
He also took on the role of assistant coach for the MUN Men's Varsity Team this year.
Ron also completed his Level 3 Coaching Certification this year.
Ron is a strong and worthy candidate for an award that is given for dedication and work this year.

Finton Gaudette
Finton has been a key factor in beach volleyball this year.
He coached beach volleyball this past summer.
In season, he has coached junior high teams. 
Finton has also played a huge role in his community in the development of the coaches and athletes.


COACH OF THE YEAR
The three finalists for the Coach of the Year are:

Rex Hillier - CBS Sabres Boys
Rex is the head coach of the Men's Canada Games Team. 
New Brunswick Invitational, July 2000 - 2nd place 
NTCC Tournament, August 2000 - 8th place 
St. John's Men's League - 4th place 
St. John's Men's League Tournament, Feb 2001 - 1st place 
Provincial Senior Championships, March 2001 - 5th place 
National Junior Championships, May 2001 - 11th place 

Rex also coaches the Queen Elizabeth High School Boys Varsity Team
Ascension Invitational - 2nd place
Volleyfest 2000 - 1st place
Abitibi Price Tournament - 1st place
Clarenville Subway Classic - 1st place
Metro Zone Championships - 1st place 
St. John's Regional Championships - 1st place
4A Provincial Championships - 1st place

CBS Sabres Club Team 
Juvenile A Provincial Championships - 1st place 

Randy Manning � Summit Midget A Boys 
Randy is the head coach of the Summit Midget A Cougars. This team has had a very successful year. 
Subway Classic - 4th place
Bonavista Invitational - November - 3rd place
Midget +1 invitational � February 2001 - 3rd place
Midget A Provincials - 1st place
(Undefeated though the tournament: 16 wins, 0 losses.)
Eastern Canadian Championships � April 2001 - 2nd place, Tier 2

Terry Mosher � CBS Sabres Girls 
Terry is the coach of many teams within the CBS Girls Volleyball Club and head coach of the Queen Elizabeth Senior Girls. Terry is also the manager of the Canada Games Men's Volleyball Team. Each one of these teams which Terry has been involved with has been very successful this season.

Clarenville Subway Classic Invitational - 1st place
St. John's Metro Zone - 1st place
St. John's Regional - 1st place
NF/Lab High School Federations 4A Championships - 1st place

CBS Sabres Girls
Ascension Keyin Tech (Midget +1's) Tournament - 1st place 
Midget A Provincial Championships - 1st place
Midget +1 Provincial Championships - 1st place
Juvenile A Provincial Championships (co-coached) - 1st place
Eastern Canadian Midgets - 8th place


WAYNE SHEPPARD MEMORIAL AWARD 
Female Senior Player of the Year. The three finalists are:

Cheryl Oldford 
For the last five years Cheryl has been the starting setter for the Memorial University Women's Varsity Volleyball Team. 
Cheryl wrapped up her varsity career having played every point of every game of every match for her five seasons. 
This year she was named a first team all-star, for the third time consecutively.

Robin Upshall 
Robin has been a key member of the varsity squad at Memorial for the last five years. 
This year in the Atlantic University Sport Volleyball League Robin finished 10th in stuff blocks averaging 1.05 per game and sixth in serving aces with 0.40 per game. 
She has become one of the top blockers in the league and it has become obvious that opposing teams do not force the middle when she is at the net.

Susan Mosher
Susan was a member of the Memorial University Women' s Varsity Volleyball Team for five years.
She finished the season 2nd in service aces, 4th in kills, 4th in overall scoring (offensive categories) and 5th in digs (defensive category) in the Atlantic University Athletic Association (AUAA) 2000-01 season.
Selected to the 2001 Championship Tournament All-star Team.
Selected as the AUAA "First Team Allstar" for the year 2001.
Runner-up for the St. John's Athlete of the Week January 2001.
Selected "Team MVP" for the Memorial Seahawks 2000-01.
Awarded a Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Scholarship in 2001 for student-athletes who successfully combine athletic and academic achievement
Selected Player of the Match in a number of Seahawk regular season matches.
Memorial University's nomination for the 2000-01 TSN Therese Quigley award.
Head coach of the 2000-01 CBS Sabres Junior and Juvenile Female volleyball teams.
Evening Telegram Athlete of the week November 11, 2000 and runner up for Athlete of the month November 2000.
A runner-up for the St. John's Athlete of the Year for 2000 and the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador 2000 Provincial Athlete of the year.


WAYNE SHEPPARD MEMORIAL AWARD
Male Senior Player of the Year. The two finalists are:

Mike Hayes
Mike was named MVP of the Men's A Senior Provincial Championships 
He was also named MVP of the St. John's Men's League
He received an All-star award at the Marine Institute Invitational Tournament
Mike is also head coach of the MUN Varsity Volleyball Team 

Doug Duffett 
Doug is a starter for the Canada Games Men's Team
He was also a member of the Canada Youth Team last summer
He received an all star at the Senior Men's A Provincial Championships 


ROBBIE WEST MEMORIAL AWARD
Female Minor Player of the Year. The three finalists are: 

Charlene Tilley (CBS Sabres)
Charlene is the starting setter for the 2001 Canada Games Team
Won gold at the NF/Lab Summer Games Beach Volleyball �2000
Charlene has also won many individual awards throughout the past year
MVP of the 2000 Queen Elizabeth Regional High School Senior Team
Runner up 2000 CBS Athlete of the year
All-star at 2001 Senior A Ladies Provincial Championships 
All-star at the 2001 Juvenile A Provincial Championships 
All-star at the 2001 Junior Provincial Championships 
All-star of the 2001 St. John's Ladies League 

Rhiannon Morgan (CBS Sabres)
Rhiannon is a middle for the 2001 Canada Games Team 
She was a member of the Queen Elizabeth Senior Team, Juvenile A, Junior, Midget and Midget +1 teams.
Rhiannon has won a number of awards this season:
She was named All-star at the Midget +1 Provincials 
All-star at the 2001 Ascension Collegiate Keyin Tech Invitational tournament 
Most Spirited 2001 Midget A Provincials
All-star 2001 Juvenile A Provincial Championships 
And also selected by Lorne Sawula to try-out for the National Female Junior Team.

Heather Osmond (Summit VB)
Heather is also a member of the Canada Games Team 
Heather was named Most Sportsmanlike Player at the NLHAF Avalon-West Girls 4A Regional Volleyball Championships 2000-2001
All-star at Juvenile A Girls Provincial Championships 2001
Bronze Medallist at the NF/Lab 2000 Summer Games- Beach Volleyball
Female Athlete of the Year for Clarenville High.

ROBBIE WEST MEMORIAL 
Male Minor Player of the YearThe three finalists are:

Mike Arns:
Mike is a member of the Men's Canada Games Team, also a member of the CBS Sabres Bulldogs.
This year Mike was awarded with: 
All Star at the Abitibi Price Tournament
All Star at the St. John's Regionals 
All Star at the Juvenile A Provincials
Mike also made the identification list for the National Youth Team last summer.


John Hillier: 
John is a setter of the Men's Canada Games Team and the CBS Sabres Bulldogs.
John plays a instrumental role in all the of the teams success which he participates on:
Ascension Invitational - 2nd place
Volleyfest 2000 - 1st place
Abitibi Price Tournament - 1st place
Clarenville Subway Classic - 1st place
Metro Zone Championships - 1st place 
St. John's Regional Championships - 1st place
4A Provincial Championships - 1st place
Provincial Juvenile A Championships - 1st place 


Shane Byrne
Shane is a member of the Our Lady Queen of Peace School in Happy Valley, Labrador .
The past year Shane has been very active in High School, Community, Regional, Provincial and Eastern Canadian Volleyball Tournaments. In almost every tournament his teams won gold, silver, or bronze medals. And personally he has won many individual awards.
All Star for the 2000 Midget Elite Eastern Tournament
Member of the Labrador team which won gold at the 2000 NF/LAB Summer Games in Beach Volleyball
Most Sportsmanlike Player at the 2000 3A High School Provincial Tournament
All Star at the Juvenile A Provincials 2001

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AWARD 
The three finalists are:

Islanders Volleyball Club 
Many people are aware Bell Island was solely recognized for hockey. But now Bell Island is also recognized as a great volleyball community.

Through the growing success and interest of volleyball, students feel pride towards their community and a sense of involvement. And with every year this interest grows. When a tournament is held on Bell Island you see many parents and students out to cheer on their teams. 

Bell Island has been a host to many tournaments this year:
Juvenile B Girls Provincials
Pre- Bantam East Girls Provincials, which was a huge success. 
And the Islanders have participated in almost all of the NLVA Provincial Championships.

Beothuck Volleyball Club
This year has been extremely successful for the Beothuck Volleyball Club in a number of ways. This year the club has increased its registration to 200 players all of whom participated in the NLVA calendar of events during the 2000-2001 volleyball season. The players in the club range from ages nine to eighteen. Including Volleyfest the club has registered 24 teams in NLVA tournaments.
The Beothuck Volleyball Club has hosted many tournaments for the NLVA this year.
Midget A Girls Provincials
Bantam Girls Provincials
The Central Newfoundland Pre- Bantam Girls 
The Central Newfoundland Pre- Bantam Boys 
And in cooperation with the NLVA they hosted the Senior Provincial Tournament

Summit Volleyball Club
The Summit Volleyball Club has had a very successful year in both hosting championships and competing. The club hosted three of the NLVA provincial championships:
Junior High Boys
Bantam Boys
Juvenile A Girls 
The Summit volleyball club team also did very well in competition this year: 
Subway Classic - 4th place

Midget +1 invitational � February 2001 - 3rd place
Midget A Provincials - 1st place

TEAM OF THE YEAR 

The three finalists are:

CBS Sabres Midget Girls 
The CBS Sabers Midget Girls head coach is Terry Mosher.
This team was very successful on the provincial level and also the National Midget Level 
The team has competed in 
Midget A Provincial Championships - 1st place 
Eastern Canadian National Midgets - 8th place, tier 1 
The majority of the players on this team also competed in the Midget +1 and Juvenile A provincial championships 


CBS Sabres Bulldogs Boys
The CBS Sabres Bulldogs Boys head coach is Rex Hillier. This team has had a great year as well 
Juvenile A Provincial Championships - 1st place
Ascension Invitational - 2nd place
Volleyfest 2000 - 1st place
Abitibi Price Tournament - 1st place
Clarenville Subway Classic - 1st place
Metro Zone Championships - 1st place 
St. John's Regional Championships - 1st place
4A Provincial Championships - 1st place


Labrador Beach Team- Boys 
This team was made up of Roy Byrne and Shane Byrne, Coach Andrew Battcock.
This team went through the round robin tournament undefeated in the NF/Lab Summer Games. In spite of going up against heavily favored teams from the other regions, the Byrne brothers won very decisive victories over the regions to make it to the gold medal match. 
With very quick defense, super blocking, and great communication on the court the Labrador team won the gold medal.
