The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial High School Girls Basketball Championships this weekend

 

The high school athletic federation will be sponsoring four girls basketball provincial championships this weekend. Champions will be declared in A, 2A, 3A and 4A divisions.

St. Joseph�s from Bay de Verde will host the girls A tournament featuring six teams in a round robin format. Teams competing for the A title include St. Mark�s (King�s Cove), Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn), Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Long Island Academy, D.C. Young School (Port Hope Simpson) and the host, St. Joseph�s. The tournament got under way Thursday at noon at both St. Joseph�s and Tricon Elementary gyms. Games continue throughout Thursday and Friday. Semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday morning, followed by the championship game at 1:30.

J.M. Olds Collegiate in Twillingate is the host school for the 2A Girls Basketball tournament. Nine teams will compete in two divisions to qualify for the playoff round. The Blue Division will consist of J. M. Olds Collegiate, Goose High School (Happy Valley-Goose Bay), St. John Bosco (St. John�s) and St. Michael�s (Arnold�s Cove). Competing in the Orange Division will be Dunne Memorial (St. Mary�s), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), St. Augustines (Plum Point), St. Lawrence Central High and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls). Divisional round robin games got under way 9 a.m. Thursday and continue throughout Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. The cross over games are scheduled for 2:30 and 4:15, with the championship game set to go at 7 p.m.

Baltimore High in Ferryland will host the 3A championships. Six teams will compete in a two division round robin format to determine the qualifiers for the semi-finals. Competing with the host in Division A will be Mobile High School and Menihek High (Labrador City). Vying for top spot in Division B will be St. Catherines (Salmonier), Fogo Island Central High and Baie Verte High. One game was played on Thursday evening, with the remaining round robin games set for Friday. The cross over games will be played at 9 a.m. and 10:45 on Saturday, followed by a consolation game and the championship game at 2:45.

Exploits Valley High in Grand Falls-Windsor will host the eight team 4A tournament. Division A will see action between Roncalli High (Avondale), Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Exploits Valley High and Lewisporte Collegiate. In Division B, St. Kevin�s (Goulds), Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Stephenville High will compete for the two playoff spots. Games get under way at 3:30 p.m. at both the Greenwood and Maple gymnasiums. The cross overs are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday at both venues with the championship game scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Greenwood Gym.
