2000 Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Annual Awards

Rosiland Pound, Chair of the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador Annual Awards program, is pleased to announce the three finalists in the following categories for the 2000 Annual Awards: 


Junior Female Athlete of the Year 

Amy Dalton - Basketball
Harbour Main native Amy Dalton had a great 2000 basketball season. She started the year being named co-captain of her high school team and leading them to a 4A Provincial Championship. Along the way she was named Most Valuable Player in the Subway Classic and was named to the all-star team at the NLBA's Elite 8 Championship. Amy concluded her high school career by being named Athlete of the Year by the high school federation along with Roncalli High Female Athlete of the Year and Senior Basketball MVP. During the summer she played with the Canada Games Ladies Program and placed 7th at the National Junior Championships. Currently, Amy is a member of the Memorial University Sea-Hawks.

Jennifer Parsons - Soccer
The 2000 soccer season was a memorable one for Jennifer Parsons of Portugal Cove. Her U17 A team captured the Senior Ladies League title where Jennifer was the play-off MVP and regular season top scorer. Provincially, Jennifer led her Zellers U17 team to the provincial championship and also played with Newfoundland's Provincial U17 team. At the Pro-Cup 2000 Nationals Jennifer helped her team to a bronze medal finish. To complete this fantastic season Jennifer toured Nebraska with the Canadian National U17 team. On this tour Jennifer scored her first goal for Canada.

Samantha Ralph - Badminton 
Samantha, from Bonavista Bay, had a fine 2000 on the badminton court. Locally, she competed in the U14, U16, U19 and adult age categories. The end result was gold medal performances in all these age groups. On the provincial level, Samantha had Triple Crown performances at the U14 and U16 provincial championships and a double gold and silver in the U19 championships. At the national level Samantha won three titles at the Atlantic Championships. At the Canadian National Championships Samantha played well and placed in the top eight in both singles and mixed doubles, while claiming the national championship in doubles.




Junior Male Athlete of the Year

Brian Francis - Soccer
Brian Francis of Burin had a stellar season on the soccer field in 2000. He played with the Canada Games team in the Burin Peninsula Championship and the Challenge Cup League. His team won the Burin Peninsula Championship with Brian being named MVP and he was named an all-star in the Challenge Cup League. Brian's team also participated in the Robbie Tournament in Toronto where they were eliminated in the semi-finals. Currently, Brian is attending St. Francis Xavier University on a soccer scholarship where he is a member of the varsity soccer team.


Tristan Toope - Cross Country Skiing

St. Barbe native Tristan Toope dominated cross-country skiing in Newfoundland and Labrador in 2000. Each major competition resulted in 1st place finishes for Tristan. He was victorious in the high school zones, the Don't Hang Up Your Skis competition, the Mount St. Margaret Challenge Day races and the Labrador Open ski races. On the national level Tristan won two silver medals at the World Junior Trials in Quebec, placed in the top 10 at the Eastern Championships in Ontario and placed 6th in the free skate race at the Junior Nationals in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Tristan is also a well-rounded athlete playing all school sports and minor hockey.

David Winsor - Volleyball
Carmanville native David Winsor proved he had a fine season in 2000 by winning the Robbie West Memorial Award, as Minor Male Player of the Year, from the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association. He has also been a member of various teams which have won Juvenile "A", Junior Men's, and the 4A Provincial High School Championships. While playing in these tournaments David has been named an all-star and has won MVP and sportsmanship awards. David has also represented Newfoundland at the National Juvenile Championships finishing 6th and is a member of the Canada Games Men's Program. Currently, David plays for the University of British Columbia.

Senior Female Athlete of the Year

Susan Mosher - Volleyball
Manuels native Susan Mosher had a dream season in 2000 on the volleyball court. She was the starting power hitter for the 1999-2000 Memorial University Sea-Hawks who went 18-0 in the regular season and won the AUAA Women's Volleyball Championship. Individually, Susan was named winner of the Wayne Sheppard Memorial Award, as Senior Female Player of the Year, by the Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association, she was named a 1999-2000 Second Team All Canadian, an all-star at the 1999-2000 AUAA Championships, and was named winner of the Graham Snow Memorial Award as Memorial University's most outstanding student athlete. Finally Susan was named a finalist for St. John's Female Athlete of the Year.

Ann Murrin - Basketball
Ann Murrin of Pouch Cove had a memorable season on the basketball court in 2000. Named co-captain of the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Ann helped lead the Sea-Hawks to an AUAA Championship after a disappointing 9-11 regular season record. At the end of the season Ann averaged 16.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game good enough for third and seventh respectively in the AUAA. At the end of the year Ann was named winner of the Ed Browne Memorial Award.

Donna Phelan - Triathlon
Donna Phelan of St. John's proved to be a world class competitor in triathlon in 2000. She competed in six professional events with placements ranging from 14th to a pair of second place finishes in the Canadian Triathlon Championships and the Muskoka Subaru Ironman Qualifier. Donna also competed in two amateur events, the World Triathlon Championships and the Australian Triathlon Championships, finishing an impressive 2nd and 3rd in the 25-29 age category in the respective events.


Senior Male Athlete of the Year

Carl English - Basketball
In 2000, Carl English accomplished two things many Newfoundland athletes can only aspire to. First, he was a member of the National Junior Men's Basketball team that competed in Brazil in the Americas Tournament for Young Men. This tournament is a qualifying tournament for the world championships. Carl also continued his career at the University of Hawaii where he played NCAA Division 1 basketball.

Jonathon Fowler - Swimming 
Grand Falls-Windsor native Jonathon Fowler had a great 2000 in the pool. In February/March he won a bronze medal in the back stroke at the Western Canadian University Championships and a silver medal in the CIAU Championships as part of the 4x200 Freestyle relay team. At the Olympic Trials in Montreal in May he finished 15th in the 200m backstroke. At the FINA World Cup in Edmonton in November Jonathon had finishes ranging from 20th to 10th in four different events. He also learned he would be part of the Canadian World Cup Team in January 2001. Jonathan's coach Mike Blondal feels that he has a very real chance of making the 2004 Olympic team.

Adam Marsh - Diving
St. John's diver Adam Marsh had a great year diving in 2000. At the provincial level he won both the three metre and one metre springboard events at the New Brunswick Provincial Championships and the Atlantic Championships. At the Canadian Senior Nationals Adam had a 4th place finish on the one metre springboard, the highest placing ever for a Newfoundland male diver at this event. 


Coach of the Year

Doug Partridge - Basketball
Doug Partridge is the head coach of the Memorial Sea-Hawks Women's Basketball team. During the 1999-2000 Doug led the Sea-Hawks to a 9-11 regular season record. However, during the playoffs the team turned it around and won the AUAA Championship. The team moved on to the CIAU Championships where they lost two very close games, one of which was against the eventual national champions.

Karen Murphy - Volleyball
St. John's native Karen Murphy had a perfect season as head coach of the Memorial University Sea-Hawks Women's Volleyball team in 1999-2000. The team finished the regular season at 18-0 and won the AUAA Championship. The team went on to an 8th place finish at the CIAU Championships in Winnipeg. Karen was also named 1999-2000 AUAA 3M Female Coach of the Year and AUAA Women's Volleyball Coach of the Year.


Larry Walsh - Soccer
Larry Walsh of St. John's had a successful season as head coach of the Zellers Girls U17A Soccer Team. The team won the St. John's Senior League Ladies Title, the Provincial Girls U17 A Championship and the St. Anthony Italia Club International tournament. However, the highlight of the season was a third place finish at the Pro-Cup National U17 Championships in St. John's in October.

Team of the Year

Memorial University Sea-Hawks Women's Basketball
The MUN Women's Basketball team had a disappointing regular season where they finished with a regular season record of 9-11. The team entered the playoffs and won the AUAA Championship. After doing this they attended the CIAU Championships in Calgary where they played and lost two close games.

Memorial University Sea-Hawks Women's Volleyball
The MUN Women's Volleyball team compiled an 18-0 record during the regular season and carried the momentum into the AUAA Championships where they won the title. The team went on to compete at the CIAU Championships where they placed 8th. The team was also named co-winner of the Newfoundland and Labrador Team of the Year.

Zellers Girls U17 A Soccer
The Zellers Girls U17 A started the year by winning the Provincial Girls U17 A Championship. Next, they won the St. John's Senior Ladies League title. On Labour Day Weekend they competed in and won the St. Anthony Italia Club International Tournament. The year was capped off with 3rd place finish at the Pro-Cup U17 A National Championships.


Executive of the Year

Bill Hogan - Swimming
Bill Hogan is a master swimming official, past president of Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador and the current elected member from the provincial swimming board of directors to the National Swimming Board of Canada. He has officiated in many swim meets at the local, provincial, national and international levels. In 2000 Bill was asked to become chair of the National Technical Swimming Committee. 

Anne Morris - Baseball
Anne Morris has been involved with St. John's Minor Baseball in a number of capacities for 17 years, most notably as president and head coach. Her most recent involvement was as head coach for the 2000 Girls team from St. John's Provincial Summer Games. This year Anne won the Les Noseworthy Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of baseball in Newfoundland.


Brian Walsh - Soccer
Brian Walsh has been refereeing soccer in St. John's for many years. He is a referee in the St. John's Senior League and registrar for the Avalon Peninsula Association of Referees. Brian is also director of referees for the province as well as an official in the Provincial Challenge Cup League. Brian also takes responsibility for assigning referees to the AUS games for Memorial University. Most recently, Brian was the chairperson for the Pro-Cup National U17 Championships this past fall.
