Government establishes boxing commission

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced that government has introduced legislation to establish a boxing authority to govern the sport of boxing in this province.

"Boxing has enjoyed tremendous support in Newfoundland and Labrador over the past number of years," said Minister Aylward. "Starting with a small club, the sport has grown and become more popular in communities throughout the province. Our athletes have enjoyed incredible success at Canada Games and national championships. As interest in amateur boxing has grown so has interest in professional boxing. Government believes it is now necessary to establish the commission to oversee and to responsibly govern professional boxing activities in the province."

The boxing commission will consist of a commissioner, medical doctor, the president of Boxing Newfoundland and Labrador, chief official, secretary/treasurer, and a technical director to liaise between amateurs and professionals. It will operate under the regulations as specified under Section 83(2) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

"Boxing Newfoundland and Labrador has successfully hosted major competitions. With the opening of the new Mile One Stadium, the commission will have a first class venue to hold major national and international boxing events. These major events will help bridge the gap between amateur and professional boxing for our own developing athletes," said Minister Aylward.

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation will work at arm's length with the commission but will not be involved in licensing. The commission will operate under predetermined guidelines in the province.
