Culture and Heritage official appointed to national board

Kevin Aylward, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to announce that Heather MacLellan, Assistant Deputy Minister for Culture and National Heritage, has been appointed to a National Capital Commission (NCC) advisory committee.

The National Capital Commission is a federal crown corporation that acts as an agent of Her Majesty to achieve the physical, cultural and economic objectives established by the federal government for the area surrounding the countrys capital, known as the national capital region.

Its mission is to create pride and unity through Canadas capital region. Some of their responsibilities include the Canada Day celebrations, the statue commemorations program, Winterlude and the Canada-World Pavilion.

"I congratulate Ms. MacLellan on her well-deserved appointment to this national committee. She is a valued member of my staff and the province is very fortunate to have someone of her abilities and expertise directing and securing the historical and heritage components of our culture. Ms. MacLellans work with this organization will provide more opportunity to celebrate the culture and heritage of this province on a national scope," said Minister Aylward.

A distinctive feature of the NCCs structure is the existence of advisory committees created to provide counsel on projects in the national capital region. Committee members represent Canadas regions. Candidates for appointment to the advisory committee are recruited from Canadas professional, academic and business communities usually having achieved national and international recognition for their work.

Ms. MacLellan is a Newfoundlander who received a Bachelor of Science degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland and studied marketing and tourism at Acadia University. Prior to assuming the position of Assistant Deputy Minister with the provincial government 18 months ago, Ms. MacLellan was employed for 25 years with Parks Canada in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and Ontario.

She attended her first meeting in Ottawa last week where deliberations centered around the NCCs statues commemorations program and marketing plans and strategies.
