Marconi exhibit concludes October 31

An Unmistakable Sound: Marconi's Transatlantic Success, an exhibit of authentic equipment, documents and photographs used by Guglielmo Marconi on December 12, 1901, concludes next week.

This exhibit includes all of the original equipment that Marconi used on Signal Hill in1901 to receive the first transatlantic signal - three dots, a single S - from Cornwall England. The receivers, earpiece and even one of the original six kites that were brought to the province by Marconi have returned to Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time in 100 years.

Since the exhibit opened in July, more than 2,900 visitors, of which over 630 have been students in school tours, have taken the opportunity to experience Marconi's great achievement and learn how wireless technology began.

An Unmistakable Sound: Marconi's Transatlantic Success is housed in the former House of Assembly chamber at the Colonial Building, St. John's and concludes October 31. The exhibit is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Tour guides are available to lead classes through the exhibit and provide context for the material. Bookings are required for school tours and can be made by calling the Archives at (709) 729-0676. Admission is free.
