Minister extends condolences to the family of the late Al Pittman

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today offered condolences to the family of the late Alphonsus J. Pittman.
"Since the 1960s, Al Pittman has been deemed as one of the province's most gifted writers," said Mr. Aylward. "He was one of the first Newfoundland poets to gain international recognition and was a passionate champion of Newfoundland and Labrador culture, helping make this province's writers credible to the Canadian literary world in the 1970s and 1980s."

Mr. Pittman spent most of his career teaching in the province and also for a short period in Montreal. Over the years, his poetry, plays and children's books won him national and international acclaim. In 1973, he co-founded the publishing firm Breakwater Books and in 2000, was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Hall of Fame.

Minister Aylward offers his deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Pittman and added, "We are indebted to this man for his contribution to the arts community in Newfoundland and Labrador. He will be remembered for his generosity and support to our young, developing writers as well as for his own body of work."
