Minister announces heritage grants for 2001-02

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to inform the public that 67 grants totalling $161,700 issued under the Heritage Investment Program have now been disbursed to heritage and archival community groups throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This doubles the amount of funding made available in previous years.

"Government recognizes that preservation of our heritage requires considerable funding," said Aylward. "I am delighted that government is able to provide support to heritage organizations throughout the province. Without this funding, many of these organizations would not be able to carry out initiatives to preserve and promote their heritage resources in their communities and have the opportunity to develop cultural tourism products."

The Heritage Investment Program is intended to assist non-profit, heritage organizations to carry out their mandates of preserving and sharing the heritage of the province. Incorporated, community-based museums, archives, heritage trusts and historical societies are eligible for support through the program.

Included in this funding are grants to the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL) for $50,000 and $26,000 for the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives (ANLA.). MANL and ANLA are umbrella organizations in the province that provide support and programming to the museums and heritage societies, and groups whose mandate it is to preserve and manage archival holdings.
