Government pleased to support Tri-Fest 2001

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased that government is able to provide funding again this year to the Corner Brook triathlon committee. Bob Mercer, MHA - Humber East, earlier this week presented $150,000 to the committee on behalf of government to host Tri-Fest 2001.

Minister Aylward who attended the opening news conference for the event said: "Over the past three years in hosting the ITU World Cup, the Corner Brook triathlon committee has been quite successful in developing and promoting Newfoundland and Labrador as a viable sport event destination, having received a great deal of local and international coverage of the event. Newfoundland and Labrador is developing its potential as a national and international sport event venue, and as such government continues to invest in opportunities such as the Tri-Fest 2001."

"Corner Brook truly is a world-class triathlon venue and the ITU World Cup and week long Tri-Fest contributes significantly to the tourism, economic and sport development of the City of Corner Brook, " said Mr. Mercer.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup proved to be such a successful event for the west coast that last year it evolved into a week long event called Tri-Fest. Tri-Fest features events for all ages, including the ITU World Cup.

"Hosting this event gives us an opportunity to showcase our scenic province and continue to develop both the sport and tourism industries in Newfoundland and Labrador," added Aylward. "I extend my best wishes for an event that promotes athletic excellence and fun."
