Minister pleased area has been recognized for historical significance

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today commented on the action of St. John's City Council to defer a decision on the development of Shamrock Field until area development plans are outlined.

"My department was pleased to provide necessary support and documentation as well as staff participation during the public consultation process," said Aylward. "We have helped present a strong case regarding the wealth of history in this area and the importance of preserving such properties. The Rooms will be an institution of international significance and I believe it should be located in a region that recognizes the importance of this historical and ecclesiastical precinct area."

St. John's Planning Area 3, which includes Shamrock Field, is one of the most historically significant areas in the city. "Government is making a significant contribution to this area with construction of The Rooms at nearby Fort Townshend, where we can present our stories of national significance, and it is important that the historic resources in this area are not adversely impacted," added Aylward.

Government has made a commitment to the culture and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador, first and foremost to its preservation and protection, and secondly, to sharing our historic riches with the rest of the world. The Rooms represents the largest single investment in our culture and heritage ever made in the province, and this facility will be a wonderful complement to historic resources that already exist in this area.
