Tely 10 trophies on loan

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the two original Telegram (Tely 10) trophies will be on loan from the sports collection of the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador. The trophies will be on display at the awards ceremony for the 74th Tely 10, which is taking place on July 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Reid Community Centre in Mount Pearl.

"These trophies are very valuable to the provinces sports archives," said Aylward. "We are delighted to be able to loan them to the Tely 10, as they are important features of the sport history of the province, and to summers of the past in Newfoundland and Labrador."

The trophies were donated to the sports archives in 1981 by the family of the late Clifford Stone. It was the practise that an individual who won the Tely 10 for three consecutive years was given the trophy to keep. Mr. Stone won the Tely 10 seven times between 1926 and 1932, and had the distinction of having held the records for the half mile, one, five and 10 mile races at the same time. He was given the first trophy for his victories in 1926, 1927 and 1928 and the second for 1929, 1930 and 1931. In 1929, Mr. Stone ran the race in 52 minutes and 57 seconds, which stood as the record until 1970. Mr. Stone was inducted in to the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame in 1975.
