Advisory Committees for Arts and Culture Centres announced

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation announced today that two advisory committees for the Arts and Culture Centres in Corner Brook and Gander have been established and members of the committees appointed.

"The Arts and Culture Centres have a mandate to preserve, develop and present the cultural diversity of Newfoundland and Labrador through a wide variety of programming. These centres throughout the province also address the needs and opportunities for cultural development in the regions where they are located," said the minister. "It is important that the six arts and culture centres in our province are accessible and relevant to the communities that they serve. This is a consultative process whereby volunteer representatives from each region will advise and assist centre managers to ensure that each centre's programs and activities meet and reflect local needs and aspirations."

Additional roles of the committees consist of offering advice and assistance in achieving goals which include the support and profile of more Newfoundland and Labrador artists at the centres, the development of young artists, expanding cultural partnerships in the community and increasing awareness and appreciation of cultural events in the region.

Orientation of these first two committees will take place in June and plans for implementation of other advisory committees will begin immediately.
