NLIS 4 May 4, 2001 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) Minister announces winners of 2001 Arts and Letters Competition Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to announce the winners of the 2001 Arts and Letters Competition. Awards were presented on May 3 at the St. Johns Arts and Culture Centre. "Since its inception in 1952, the Arts and Letters Competition has served to stimulate creative talent in the province, as the work of both amateurs and professionals is recognized through this program," said Minister Aylward. "The Arts and Letters Competition is a very important and popular initiative of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. This year alone, there were nearly 800 entries submitted by talented and artistic Newfoundlanders and Labradorians of all ages." The competition consists of junior (ages 12 to 18) and senior (ages 19 and over) divisions. The junior category features three categories including poetry, prose and visual arts. The first place winner in each category received $300, and the second and third place winners received $200 and $100 respectively. The senior division consists of nine categories including poetry, short fiction, non-fictional prose, dramatic script, musical composition, painting, three dimensional art, drawing and graphic art and photography. The first place winner in each of the senior categories received $600, and the second and third place winners received $300 and $150 respectively. This year, the Arts and Letters Competition also secured funding to pay cash awards of $50 and $25 to the honourable mentions in the senior and junior levels respectively. The winner of the Percy Janes First Novel Award, an award commemorating the life and work of one of Newfoundlands most distinguished writers, received $1,000. Funding for the Arts and Letters Competition is provided by the Culture and Heritage Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. An exhibition of the winning entries along with selected other entries can be viewed at the Provincial Art Gallery at the St. Johns Arts and Culture Centre from May 4 to May 20. "Todays artists of Newfoundland and Labrador are essential in helping us define who we are and our place in the world," added Minister Aylward. "I would like to encourage individuals to use their artistic talents and help cultivate the arts which is a vital component of our society. Next year, the Arts and Letters Competition will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, and it is a wonderful opportunity to participate in this important program." The deadline for submissions for the 2002 Arts and Letters Competition is February 15, 2002.
