Funding provided to tourist chalets

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced further funding of $30,000 for community-run tourist chalets located throughout the province. This brings the total funding to $84,000.

"In addition to the seven provincial information centres that are operated by government, there are 28 tourist chalets across the province operated by local tourism associations or development associations," said Minister Aylward. "The staff of these tourist chalets play an integral role in our tourism industry, as they meet face-to-face with thousands of visitors each year and have the tremendous responsibility of ensuring that our visitors are given plenty of information about our tourism attractions and products."

Through consultations with representatives in the tourism industry, government has identified a great need for assistance for these community-run tourist chalets. They will share in the $84,000 grant.

"The importance of providing first-class service at tourist chalets is often underestimated and this funding will go a long way in improving the overall quality of service that they are able to offer. Government is pleased to support this essential component of the tourism industry, whether it be to upgrade basic amenities or to provide training for staff."
