Government expresses appreciation for volunteer efforts

On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked and crashed four commercial flights in the United States resulting in the deaths of thousands, the destruction of the World Trade Centre, extensive damage to the Pentagon and the closure of American airspace. The closure of American airspace resulted in 77 planes with approximately 13,000 passengers and crew being diverted from their destinations to airports in this province. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians responded to the crisis by extending their hospitality, generosity and friendship. Today, government extended its appreciation to volunteers, municipalities, organizations and corporations for their outstanding response.

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and minister responsible for the Emergency Measures Organization, accompanied by Health and Community Services Minister Julie Bettney, Human Resources and Employment Minister Gerald Smith, and Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons, paid tribute to the thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians that opened their hearts and homes to these unexpected visitors.

"The team effort of the federal, provincial and municipal governments and other agencies was overwhelming, and the help from private and corporate citizens has been generous and heartfelt," said Minister Langdon. "Many people contacted us and offered their homes to the passengers, a gesture that was sincerely appreciated. Our province's reputation of generosity and kindness for those in need has certainly been evident during this tragic period."

The ministers were joined by mayors from around the province representing municipalities that received passengers and crew. Minister Langdon unveiled a plaque that will be presented to each of these municipalities and unveiled another plaque that will be presented to all organizations that played a role in the response to the crisis.

The minister noted that through this enormous volunteer effort, passengers were provided with accommodations, meals, transportation and communications at a time of extreme distress. He stated that this year is the International Year of Volunteers and Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have proudly demonstrated its theme - "The Value of One - The Power of Many."
