Hurricane Erin may hit Avalon hard

The Newfoundland and Labrador Emergency Measures Organization (NLEMO) has been informed by the Newfoundland Weather Office in Gander and the Canadian Hurricane Centre in Halifax that effects of Hurricane Erin could have a significant impact on communities on the Southern Avalon peninsula from Placentia Bay to Trepassey Bay.

The storm surge advisory is as follows:

Hurricane Erin is due to make landfall in the vicinity of St. Mary's Bay around supper time tonight. A storm surge of up to 1.0 meter may possibly accompany this system. The storm surge is expected to coincide with high tide in the area this evening, around 7:00 p.m. NDT. The combination of tide and surge will lead to higher than normal water levels along the shorelines of the Southern Avalon peninsula. Some flooding is possible along the coast since large ocean waves are also expected to follow the passage of the storm. Significant wave heights near 6.0 meters may move into the area leading to very high surf in the near shore. Communities most likely to be affected are those in Trepassey Bay and St. Mary's Bay. Potential for coastal flooding also exists in the eastern half of Placentia Bay, should the storm track slightly to the west. Water levels will fall again later this evening as high tide departs and the storm moves away.

Residents are also advised that precautions should be taken to protect personal safety, property, boats, gear, etc.
