The following is being distributed at the request of the Office of the Fire Commissioner:

Cleaning and maintenance of wood stoves

A recent investigation by the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary found that a fire started as a result of placing hot ashes from a wood stove in a metal bucket next to combustible materials. Fire Commissioner Fred Hollett said this fire caused one fatality and this type of dangerous practice has caused other house fires throughout the province.

"Hot ashes can be difficult to detect," said Mr. Hollett. "The public are advised that the proper disposal of ash is very important to prevent a fire occurrence."

The fire commissioner said that safety should always be the highest priority and he offered some tips to help prevent fires in the home.

  • Home owners should ensure stove ash is cold before cleaning wood burning appliances.

  • Ash should be placed in a metal bucket with a metal cover and placed outdoors in a safe location away from all combustibles.

  • Proper maintenance and use of all fuel fired appliances is necessary to ensure a safe home or workplace environment.
