Advisory: Fire in air exchanger caused by excessive snow accumulation

Results of a recent fire investigation have revealed that a fire has occurred in an air exchanger due to the fact that the outside air intake was blocked by snow.

The unit was unable to draw in outside air which resulted in the motor overheating and resulting in a fire. Extensive damage was caused to the home.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner recommends that all thru-wall air intakes and exterior vents for air exchangers, propane fireplaces, furnaces or stoves be kept clear of snow accumulation.

In the case of fuel fired appliances using propane, oil or wood, there may also be a carbon monoxide problem created in the home or structure due to inadequate combustion air reaching the appliance. Homeowners are advised to check all appliances. Questions with respect to the general operation of units or appliances should be directed to the supplier/installer. As well, it is appropriate to ensure that all smoke or CO (carbon monoxide) alarms are working properly and checked on a regular basis.

Please contact the Office of the Fire Commissioner or your local fire department for any further clarification.
