Minister announces members of committee to review applications for Intervener Funding Program

Mines and Energy Minister, Lloyd Matthews, today announced the committee members responsible for reviewing applications for the Intervener Funding Program. The members of the review committee will examine applications received from groups and individuals who wish to participate in the White Rose Development Application public review process.

"The committee members possess a great deal of knowledge about the province's oil and gas industry. I am confident the review process will be fair and thorough. The successful applicants will in turn ensure the relevant issues surrounding the project will be presented, thus safeguarding the integrity of the public review process," said Matthews.

The members of the committee include:
John Fleming, M. Sc., P.Geo. - Mr. Fleming is a natural resources and environment consultant. Prior to his retirement from the provincial public service in 1996, he held various positions including the deputy minister for the departments of Mines and Energy and Environment.

Cyril McCormick, B.Sc, B.Ed, M.Ed (Admin)- Mr. McCormick is a former deputy minister of Education. He chaired the Hibernia Construction Training Coordination Committee.

Charles Lester - Mr. Lester is the director of policy and strategic planning for the Energy Branch of the Department of Mines and Energy

"Public participation in the management and development of the province's natural resources is key to ensuring the best possible decisions for the people of this province. The funding being provided will assist groups and individuals that otherwise would not be able to participate in the public review process with the opportunity to outline interests, make constructive comments and voice any concerns about the White Rose Development process," said Matthews.

Intervener funding is available to any individual or public interest organization that can demonstrate that they lack sufficient funding to make a meaningful presentation; and that they will provide meaningful comment that would contribute to the merit of the public review process. In total, funding up to $100,000 is available to assist groups or individuals to make presentations. The level of funding provided to each proponent will depend upon the number of applications received. Applications for funding must be submitted to the Department of Mines and Energy by 5:00 p.m. today. Successful applicants will be notified by May 31, 2001.
