Silviculture work announced for Triton Brook area

Terra Nova MHA Tom Lush, in conjunction with Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford, has announced funding in the amount of $75,920 for a reforestation initiative taking place in Terra Nova district. The funding is being provided through the provincial silviculture program.

"The forest industry is of vital importance to the district of Terra Nova and promoting proper forest management has been a lifetime objective of mine," said Mr. Lush. "I know of no other public initiative that is more practical and more meaningful than ensuring the sustainability of our forest resources."

Woodford said responsible management of our forest resource through meaningful silviculture activity will ensure our province's forests remain productive into the future. "Silviculture initiatives such as this demonstrate government's commitment to sustainable forest management and also provide a significant boost to local economies."

The aim of this project is to reforest non-regenerating forest sites that burned during the 1998 Triton Brook forest fire. The project will see the planting of 875,000 seedlings over an area of 350 hectares. The seedlings were grown at the Wooddale Provincial Tree Nursery. The project will create work for approximately 20 individuals over seven weeks.
