MHA comments on destruction of Salvage fish plant

Tom Lush, MHA - Terra Nova, today commented on the destruction of the processing plant in Salvage last night.

"The loss of the fish plant at Salvage, which was destroyed by fire last night, is devastating news to the town of Salvage and to its surrounding communities," said Mr. Lush. "The fish plant employed upwards of 100 people during its peak operation period and was a great contributor to the local economy."

Mr. Lush said the fish plant, which is owned by P. Janes and Sons Ltd. of Hants Harbour, has been one of the most successful processing plants in rural Newfoundland.

"Ive been in touch with the owners of the fish plant to express my concern as the local MHA and as a minister of government and to pledge my encouragement and support to the company in terms of dealing with this problem," said Mr. Lush. "Similarly, I have been in touch with the mayor of Salvage and the affected fish plant workers."

Mr. Lush concluded by saying the company and the community are going through a period of assessment and evaluation in an effort to determine the future course and direction of the fish plant.

"I hope that by all stakeholders working together, we can help resolve the unfortunate circumstances created by this situation."
