Silviculture funding announced for Bay d'Espoir area

Oliver Langdon, MHA - Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, has announced funding in the amount of $222,700 for a major silviculture initiative in the Bay d'Espoir area. The announcement was made today in conjunction with Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford. The funding has been made available through the provincial government's silviculture program.

Mr. Langdon said this initiative will not only enhance the forest area in Bay d'Espoir, but will provide much needed jobs in the area.

"Investing in the future of our provincial forest resource through the planting of tree seedlings is an integral component of our department's responsible approach to sustainable forest management," said Mr. Woodford. "Silviculture activity helps enhance the provincial wood supply and ensure sources of fibre are available for the future."

Activity will take place in the areas of Old Pauls, Camp 5, Woodcat, Camp 11 and Swanger Cove. Work will include pre-commercial thinning, commercial thinning, hardwood management, planting and planting maintenance. These treatments focus on stand improvement and recovery, while maintaining the health and integrity of the forest ecosystem.

Work is now under way, creating employment for 26 people for 12 weeks.
