"These three projects will greatly improve the water and sewer systems in each of these communities," stated Ms. Thistle. " The provincial government's contribution to the projects demonstrates its commitment to developing municipal infrastructure in rural communities."

Programs are cost-shared between the province, municipality and federal government with the federal government paying one-third of the cost and the provincial/municipal share determined in accordance with a new cost-sharing arrangement which has the province paying the larger portion of the total cost for projects in many smaller communities.

The Canada Newfoundland Infrastructure Program has a mandate to support the creation of green municipal infrastructure. Investments will include projects related to water and wastewater systems and solid waste management. The program is administered provincially by the Department of Municipal and Provincial Affairs, federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and cost-shared with municipalities. The program will mean a total investment in Newfoundland and Labrador of $153.7 million over five years.
