Charges laid resulting from onboard ship accident

Labour Minister Anna Thistle has announced that Atlantic Shrimp Company Limited of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and East Coast Marine Limited of St. John's, made their first court appearance in St. John's Provincial Court on April 17, 2001, for alleged violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. The charges stem from an accident that occurred onboard the Arctic Prawns in July 1999, at the St. John's waterfront, when two employees of East Coast Marine Limited were injured, one fatally, while performing repairs for Atlantic Shrimp Company Limited, owners of the vessel. The companies will make a second court appearance on May 8, 2001.

Two charges were laid against East Coast Marine Limited, one alleging failure to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their workers. The second charge is in connection with properly ensuring that workers are made familiar with hazards that may be encountered in the workplace.

Of the seven charges laid against Atlantic Shrimp Company Limited, four related to the equipment and devices onboard the ship; two charges allege that the company failed to ensure that safe work procedures were being followed, and failure to provide the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the health and safety of workers. The remaining charge against Atlantic Shrimp Company Limited was for failing to ensure that persons not in their employ were not exposed to health and safety hazards.
