Department of Labour contributes $5,000 to indoor air quality campaign

The Department of Labour has made a $5,000 contribution to the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Associations indoor air quality campaign. The department has contributed $5,000 annually since 1996, when the lung association began a vigorous campaign to develop air quality awareness in the province.

"Government recognizes the importance of this annual campaign and we are pleased to partner again this year," said Minister Anna Thistle. "I encourage families, organizations, workplaces and individuals to commit to improving the air we breathe, both inside and outside."

"The Department of Labour continues to be a key player in this vital awareness program and we are grateful for their commitment," said Peggy Johnson, executive director of the association. "We are also grateful to the Workplace Health and Safety Compensation Commission for partnering in the promotion and delivery of our program materials to the workplace."

Approximately 20 per cent of the provinces population, translating into more than 100,000 people, has a breathing problem. Most of these people are bothered by scented products. The chemicals found in these products can affect people with such ailment as asthma, emphysema, hay fever and allergies.

"Being aware of what we know about scents, is smelling good really worth the price of the suffering we inflict on other people?" added Sandra Chaytor, president of the board of directors for the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association.
