Government committed to enhancing social and economic development

The creation of the new Department of Labour demonstrates governments commitment to renewing its relationship with labour, business and community groups, with a view to improving partnerships and evolving new approaches to labour-management relations in the province.

Taking the necessary steps with labour and industry to create and maintain a stable labour relations environment for future offshore fabrication and major construction projects is a priority with government.

A comprehensive report on these issues completed by Morgan Cooper, was recently received by government and released to key stakeholders. "The timeliness of this release is of major importance to the proponent, prospective contractors and unions, currently involved in preliminary discussions on the White Rose project, Newfoundland and Labradors proposed third offshore oil development," said Minister Thistle.

"Safe, healthy workplaces, where the rights and interests of workers are protected and suitable benefits derived, will also continue to be a goal of this government," said Labour Minister Anna Thistle.

"Building on this review, we will examine the need for amendments to the Labour Relations Act for presentation in the Spring Session of the House," she added.
